We decided to make new crayons yesterday. This required me to take all 3 kids to the Dollar Tree then Walmart in search of a mini muffin pan. Luckily, they all behaved! Here's a few pictures and an explanation of how we made them.
Baggie full of "new" crayons
These were amazingly easy to make! First we sorted through our crayons and pulled out all the broken ones. We then peeled the paper off each and broke the crayons into small pieces. I greased a mini-muffin pan and we began arranging the crayon pieces. I heated the oven to 250 degrees and put the pan in the oven. They only took about 10-12 minutes to melt completely. Then I set the pan on top of the stove to let them cool. Within an hour they were ready!
Lessons taught:
1) We explored properties of matter, discussing how the crayons were solids then became liquids then cooled and formed solids again. This sparked a lot of interesting discussions with a 2 year old and 5 year old about solids and liquids!
2) They worked on sorting and categorizing the crayons by color.
3) We discussed how we can reduce, reuse and recycle old things in our home to make new, great things!
I would love to hear stories or ideas you have about making new crayons!
